Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries to Maximize Solar Power in the Free Trade Area and Free Port of Sabang

On August 12, the Sabang Free Trade Area and Free Port Concession Agency (BPKS) signed an MoU with PT Empat Mitra Indika Tenaga Surya (EMITS) and Enertec Mitra Solusi (ENERTEC) on the realization of Sabang free port into a "green port" that applies the principle of New Renewable Energy (EBT/NRE) through the installation of Solar PV (Photovoltaic). The signing was held at the Office of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, witnessed by the Deputy Coordinator for Maritime Sovereignty and Energy, Basilio Dias Araujo.

Deputy Basiolio claimed that such an effort showed the commitment of the Government of Indonesia in the realization of the Paris Agreement ratification on Law No. 16/2016. It is also aligned with President Joko Widodo's order to reduce Steam Power Plants on the Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) for 2021-2030, not to mention the encouragement to use New Renewable Energy (EBT) as a substitute for generating electricity in Indonesia as stipulated in 2020-2024 RPJMN. The MoU also aligns with the National Energy Policy (KEN) and has become the National Priority Program.

According to Deputy Basilio, Indonesia has the potential for solar energy as much as 207.8 GW but only uses around 153.8 MW. As a matter of fact, PT PLN (Persero) is preparing the RUPTL by further increasing the NRE portion from 30% to 48% in 2019-2028. Until mid-2020, Indonesia's total capacity of NRE power plants reached 10,426 Megawatts (MW) or 14.70% of the total installed capacity of national power plants. Hence, there is still a gap of around 4,000 MW between the RUPTL and the 23% NRE mix target in 2025.
